Aluminum TIG Welding & Repair

Boats, trailers, ramps, railings, racks and custom repairs, with the preparation and heat control aluminum actually needs.

Aluminum repairs require different equipment and technique than ordinary steel welding. Set Apart Metal Works provides TIG welding for aluminum boats, trailers, ramps, railings, equipment and custom parts, both onsite and in the shop.

The difference is in the details: AC TIG, thorough cleaning, the right filler for the alloy, and real heat control. Contamination shows up as porosity, too much heat burns through the parent metal, and the wrong filler shows up as a crack six months later. 5356 filler is used where the application calls for it.

A word on scope, because it is honest and it saves arguments: aluminum repairs routinely grow once the area is cleaned. Corrosion and previous repairs hide under paint and oxide, and a crack is often longer than it looks. That gets discussed the moment it is visible, not after the work is done.

What Actually Fails

The Problems This Solves

If you recognize your own broken thing in this list, you are in the right place.

Cracks that were welded once already

A previous repair with the wrong filler or too much heat leaves a harder, more brittle area that cracks alongside the old weld. That material has to come out before anything new goes in.

Porosity from contamination

Oil, paint, oxide and moisture all end up in the weld. Preparation is most of the job on aluminum, and skipping it is why so many aluminum repairs fail.

Burn-through on thin sections

Hulls, trailer skins and thin extrusion need heat control and often a backing approach — heat management is the difference between a repair and a bigger hole.

Galvanic corrosion at fasteners

Steel hardware in aluminum eats the aluminum around it. Worth fixing properly at the same time, or the repair outlives the metal next to it.

Questions

About Aluminum TIG Welding

Can you weld cast aluminum?

Sometimes. Cast aluminum varies enormously and some castings are contaminated all the way through with oil absorbed over years of service. Tyler will tell you honestly whether a particular casting is a reasonable candidate before taking money for it.

Why did my aluminum repair crack again?

Usually filler selection, heat input or preparation. A repair done with steel habits leaves a brittle heat-affected zone, and the next crack appears alongside the old weld rather than in it.

Can aluminum welding be done on site?

Yes, though aluminum is more sensitive to wind and contamination than steel, so some jobs genuinely come out better at the shop. That is a judgment made per job, not a blanket policy.

Will the repair be invisible?

A weld can be dressed back and blended, but aluminum does not hide heat marks the way paint hides steel. If cosmetic finish matters, say so up front so it can be quoted as part of the scope rather than assumed.
